BDO Foundation reaches 60,000 super typhoon Yolanda victims in underserved areas

Simultaneous relief operations were mounted by BDO Foundation with the support of BDO volunteers from its provincial branches, who braved the odds in distributing the relief goods to every constituent in the interior barangays that were underserved reaching close to 60,000 families affected by super typhoon Yolanda.

The provinces and municipalities covered were: Alangalang. Dulag, Julita, Ormoc City, Palo,Tacloban City, Tanauan, Tolosa in Leyte - 15,000 families; Panay, Pontevedra, Ivisan and Roxas City in Capiz - 7,000 families; Ajuy, Passi and Estancia in Iloilo - 9,985 families; Basey in Western Samar - 3,000 families; Catarman in Northern Samar - 2,500 families; Barbaza and San Jose in Antique - 2,500 families; Bogo and Daan Bantayan in Cebu - 8,000 families; Cadiz and Escalante in Negros Occidental - 2,500 families; Batan, New Washington, Kalibo, Numancia and Ibajay in Aklan - 6,000 families and Maasin, Macrohon in Southern Leyte - 2,500 families.

These areas were severely ravaged by the super typhoon toppling down power and communication lines, destroying infrastructure, making relief efforts more difficult to mount.

BDO Foundation partnered with Air Asia, AFP Civil Relations and Japan Air-Self Defense Force C130, which airlifted the goods to Tacloban via Manila. Ground handling was done by a community group called Kusog Tacloban. Shipment of goods for Ormoc and Basey, Western Samar was courtesy of Lite Shipping Company. Ground handler for Catarman, Northern Samar and Basey, Western Samar was CARD-MRI, NGO partner of BDO Foundation.

SM stores in Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, Sorsogon, Mall of Asia and Makati provided support in the preparation of relief goods ready for distribution.

With disaster response as one of the foundation's major advocacy, it is now getting ready for the second phase of its program which is rehabilitation and reconstruction i.e., renovating barangay health centers, building resettlement sites in areas affected, constructing school buildings and multipurpose halls.
