BDO Trust Launches the First ESG Local Equity Fund in the Philippines

BDO Trust and Investments Group has launched the BDO ESG Equity Fund, a unit investment trust fund (UITF) that invests in local companies that exhibit good environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices. The Fund is the first ESG-themed UITF in the Philippines.

ESG refers to the three key factors in measuring the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment in a company or business to the market as a whole. This has also become known as socially responsible approach to investing.

Responsible investing supports companies that adhere to ESG practices that ensure environmental protection and community development, which, in turn, are deemed to sustain the company’s profitability and by extension, that of its investors.

In the construction of the investment portfolio, the BDO ESG Equity Fund subscribes to the specific guidelines set by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for ESG investing. The IFC is an international financial institution that offers investment, advisory and asset management services to encourage private sector development in developing countries. It is a member of the World Bank Group.

For developing this pioneering investment fund, BDO Trust was recently awarded by The Asset Magazine the Impact Investor of Year Award during The Asset Triple A Asset Servicing, Investor and Fund Management Awards 2016 held last 6 June 2016 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Hong Kong.

This award recognizes the institution that best exemplifies principled investing aimed at enhancing the environment we live in, and has made a conscious decision to support ecologically sound businesses. The citation notes that BDO Trust, through the BDO ESG Equity Fund, has developed the techniques to deliver returns which do not negatively impact the long-term sustainability of the environment.

The Fund is available to retail and institutional clients with aggressive risk appetite and who want exposure to companies with responsible business practices. For a minimum amount of PhP 10,000, interested investors can access this pioneer in socially responsible investing. The Fund can be accessed via BDO branches nationwide as well via iOnline, BDO’s UITF Online Investing Facility.
